Breast Implants : Sizing and Profile

"Since 1986, we've helped thousands of women and men improve their appearance and increase their self-esteem."

Implant Sizing

Bigger is not always better when it comes to choosing the most appropriate breast implant size and shape. This is why your consultation with Dr. Todd B. Koch, at Amherst Cosmetic Surgery Center, is so important. During this time, the two of you can discuss the various options and factors associated with breast augmentation.

During your consultation, you will have the opportunity to try on different size implants of various shapes. This will assist you in making an educated decision about the best size to fit your frame. At the time of your surgery, Dr. Koch will use a trial implant in which he can inflate to different volumes, allowing him to select the most appropriate size based on your preoperative evaluation. The various factors that are used to determine the best size for your procedure includes: height, weight, elasticity of the skin, chest wall and breast dimensions, and your individual personal desires.

Implant Profiles

Although saline and silicone gel are different in many ways, such as silicone gel implants are at a set-filled volume while saline implants are at flexible-filled volume (allowing the surgeon to adjust the volume during the procedure), they share commonalities associated with implant profiles.

No matter which type of breast implant you decide on, you can choose between: low profile (slightly less projection with a mildly wider base width), moderate profile (a standard projection with average base width) or high plus profile (highest projection with narrower base width). The implant profile you choose is determined by the chest wall and breast dimensions, as well as the shape and projection you desire. Dr. Koch will make his recommendations while listening to your needs.

During your consultation, you can also learn about the different types of shell surfaces to choose from: textured or smooth. There are advantages and disadvantages to both; therefore, it is in your best interest to learn about both types of shell surfaces before making your decision.
